Strange insect (I suppose)

Some sort of an advanced grashopper?
It came flying by after dinner time on Fraser Island one of the days we were there.

    Apparently it belongs to the family of the Phasmatidae, or stick insects.

    I read on some australian bug websites that females dont fly, but this one was clearly in a lot of distress and dint want the attention. Its attempt to leave looked very bulky and troublesome. A less scard friendly local picked it up and pu it in a eucalyptus tree, which is their main food source.

    Beautiful creature!
